2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
The book is worth the price!!!
By RonnieV
I must say this book was a great choice. I believe it made the difference. It brings things together in a concise, easy to understand manner. I have also ordered the CompTIA A+ 220-701 and 220-702 Exam Cram (5th Edition), CompTIA Security+ SY0-301 Authorized Exam Cram (3rd Edition), and the MCTS 70-680 Exam Cram: Microsoft Windows 7, Configuring books. I hope they make as much a difference as this one did.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
Excellent for Studying
By Aaron
I’m behind in books for computer technology, my networking Elearning course didn’t have the same amount of depth and straight-forward explanation as this book does. I paid $500 for the eLearning through comptia, I took a practice test and scored 53%, after the first six chapters of this book, I feel that I’ve added another 40% to my score.

Personally, I prefer books or a live class in order to learn about a subject, this book delivers for me as it is concise and thorough. If there is a technology you “have” to know about for the test, the author does a great job of putting in alerts of this and where it will be covered later as the book progresses.

Otherwise, technologies are stripped down, explained and represented nicely in illustrations. There are practice tests, a quick reference page and a digital copy of the book as well.

I couldn’t ask for anything more.

The Exam Cram book was one of several books I read to prepare for the exam, and contains most of what you need to know for the test. Combined with a book such as Todd Lammle’s “Network+ Study Guide”, or Kevin Wallace’s “Network+ Authorized Cert Guide” (I read them all), after thorough study you should pass the test with no problem. My advice is not to worry too much about passing the exam, as it really isn’t very difficult. Just focus on understanding networking, which is what you need to do anyway if you want to work in the field, and if you feel you have achieved this (plus memorizing some factual data such as protocols and ethernet info, etc.) you shouldn’t have any problem with the exam. Also, between Lammle’s book and the Exam Cram there are lots of relevant questions of the type found on the test.

I bought the book because although I am not a beginner to electronics, I am to ZigBee, and I am lazy and want a quick start to what to get and why and which “start-bugs” to avoid. Faludi does a good job here and tries to please everybody by including non-Windows based (Mac and Linux) examples where he can (this market is clearly biased towards Windows).

Evidently you could simply download the free ZigBee spec’ and read it – it is not too boring and took me about four days to scan through it, but for the cheap price, I would recommend that even a professional would recover the cost in time saved from this book but evidently he will not be interested in the simplistic treatment of how to connect A to B, just the tips and hints and as a quick broad outline for both the spec and the parts range.

For the beginner this book is excellent with both diagrams and photographs of how to wire up the half dozen-or-so connections between one module and another plus very full descriptions + screen shots of how to drive the (mainly Windows based) software.

The firmware example-code is consistently of the simplest-only-to-do-the-principle (there is no cheating by padding with large amounts of code) and gradually the reader is taken into more and more detail about protocols and networking in a painless manner.

A huge amount of work has gone into this book to make it look simple. It is also up to date (late 2010). I highly recommend it to anyone.

After wasting countless hours scouring the internet for info on how to update firmware, and configure/interface with the series 2, I found this book to be a godsend. It is simple to follow and clearly written. The book is broken down into little projects so you can quickly get a network up and running, and then move on to building bigger and more sophisticated networks. Without Faludi’s guidance, my xBees would surely be gathering dust on a shelf. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in building wireless projects!

He provides both a step by step guide and a basic understanding/education of the technology involved.

This book starts with describing initial choices around hardware and software to construct a XBee wireless network, Professor Faludi also does a quick tutorial on radio transmissions theory and wireless networking. Once you have the bits and pieces set out, Professor Faludi walks through a number of projects helping to build up the readers overall knowledge:

1. A Wireless doorbell

2. Romantic Lighting Sensor

3. Simple Sensor Network

4. Simple Sensor with Sleep Project

He then discusses a XBee Internet Gateway (XIG) project ( see his blog), this opens up the borders by allowing the XBee radios to proxy through the ConnectPort X2 and hence be accessable via the Web.

Next project, a project to Tweat to a XBee. Professor Faludi concludes the book with a review of the ZigBee stack, a list of plans for the ZigBee platform. Finally there is a resource guide for Arduino, Python, ZigBee, Digi, etc.

This book really offers a end to end introduction to XBee radio networks and is well worth the time for anyone who is hacking or looking at industrial applications in sensor networks.

Look For Voip Billing System @ Amazon.com

To set up a business VoIP system, you need assorted components. A central device to manage the calls, the way a private branch interchange (PBX) or key scheme unit (KSU) does in traditionalisti phone schemes is one of them.

This may be a consecrated piece of hardware such as an IP PBX, a regular PBX that has been IP-enabled, or a server running specialized software. You will also need phones and a selective information network. In some cases, you may be capable to use your existent digital phones and computer network, though you may need to upgrade a great deal of of your network hardware.

VoIP Benefit

The most prominent gain of an IP PBX is for businesses with multiple locations. With the vantage of VoIP, all the offices on a LAN or WAN may get the profits of having a mutual office phone system. The profits are – extension dialing, seamless call transfers, and other features.

In addition to making it requiring little effort to communicate, this sharing of features may heighten collaboration as laborers at dissimilar emplacements may genuinely feel like they are portion of the same organization. Plus, if they are on the company network, the phone calls are free – even if your offices are located thousands of miles apart. It is an vantage in saving cash expended on calling amongst two subsections of the same office.

VoIP Conversations

Computer networks are designed to handle messy data: packets arrive out of order and galore are even lost, but in most cases the data being sent may effortlessly be reconstructed when it is needed. Voice conversations, though, are not as tolerant of these kinds of disturbances. Each packet of sound has to arrive in the rectify order because they are being sent in real time – if packets are lost; the speech sounds distorted, choppy, or falls off all together. This is why VoIP services that rely on the Internet to transmit calls may have uneven phone quality.

The selection of a business VoIP solution is a major decision. Voice service is critical to the operation of the business, so no one wants to apply a technology that will compromise call quality or reliability in any way. On the other hand, the cost savings and value-added functionality available with VoIP makes it a compelling investment.

LANs & WANs

The VoIP phone scheme is beneficial for companies having multiple emplacements branches, telecommuters and remote sales offices. And the emplacements are connected with a company’s Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). In that case the companies are suitable for using a VoIP system.

You may portion the full features of your phone scheme all over all your locations. In addition, even if you have one office in one place and one in dissimilar place, VoIP allows calls amidst them by way of extension dialing, making it a zero cost call. For businesses with hefty regularly every month long distance charges due to calls among far off locations, is an beautiful reason to upgrade.

VoIP Process

A VoIP phoning routine requires a regular phone, an adapter, broadband Internet service, and a subscription to a VoIP service. When you place a call, it is sent over the Internet as selective information until it nears the recipient’s destination.

Then the call is translated back into a more established format and completes the trip over ordinary phone lines. Also known as Internet telephony, this allows for exceedingly cheap long-distance and global calls.

VoIP Drawbacks

The main drawback of VoIP schemes is the network requirements.

In VoIP telephony the greatest challenge is the bandwidth. It requires high bandwidth for clear messaging.

If you are netadmin, sysadmin or you are an IT guy and learn this book, you can limit p2p/bittorrent traffic, guarantee bandwith for some services like http, ftp, voip, etc. (QoS), you can protect your network with firewalls.

First in chapter 1 we learn about Networking Fundamentals, then in chapter 2, about Security Threats in every OSI layer. After that we are ready to learn about basis of netfilter and iproute (Firewall and QoS).

In next chapters, show us how to do layer 7 filtering, practical QoS and more advanced things. Then we apply this knowledge in a very practical serie of scenerios that come later in the book.

Very good book, I recomend this to you.

For me, I found the title misleading. I was mainly interested in the QoS aspect as there are already excellent books available on firewalling and NAT.

The QoS seemed to be mostly an afterthought. The QoS policies utilized were tailored to the example networks but there was no discussion of generic QoS capabilities.

The biggest gripe though, is that there was Zero coverage of DSCP and/or 802.1q packet tagging. This book considers queue scheduling based on netfilter or L7-filter to be all that exists as far as QoS is concerned. If you want treatment of DSCP or 802.1p look elsewhere.

P.S. This book is cookbook format. Don’t expect to learn the intricate details. It is not a bad book if that is what you are looking for but if you want a more “textbook” style book with complete coverage you will be disappointed.

The language is extremely accessible and objective, unlike the majority of the many tutorials on this subject found on the net. It goes from the very basics with a good, and not boring, theoric base, and advances in a practical hands-on way, from a simple firewall script for a Linux Workstation to a complex structure of different firewalls connecting branches from a large company serving and using a great array of internet services.

The only buts I found were a couple of differences in behavior in some firewall rules, that produced a different result from the described in the book when I implemented them. However, they were easily corrected after a little traffic monitoring and googling. Probably from differences in Linux flavor or packet versions used. My advice is the same as always, test everything well before putting anything in production.

Bottom line is, best book I found to learn Linux Firewalls. Worth every cent.
